REGULATIONS OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONTEST OF ENGLISH

Jerzy Dec – the Managing Director of the College “The Top” in Kraków, a private school for teachers established on the grounds of the 7th September 1991 Education System Act in Poland (* Journal of Laws of 1996, No. 67, Item 329 with amendments), Decree of the Ministry of Education of 12th August 1997 on teacher training colleges (*Journal of Laws of 1997, No. 104, Item 664 with amendments) and the Statute of the College “The Top” and the Chancellor of the University of Economics and Humanities in Bielsko-Biała, the private school number 126 accredited by the Ministry of Education on the basis of the Act of 12th September 1990 on tertiary education (*Journal of Laws of 1990, No.65, Item 385) and the Statute of the University of Economics and Humanities on the basis of the 28th Decree of the Ministry of Education of 14th September 1992 on the organisation of contests (Journal of the Ministry of Education of 1992, No. 7, Item 31) and in accordance with the legal and statutory laws

11th International Contest of English Language

 

I. ORGANIZERS

The organizers of the Contest are:

- the College “The Top” in Kraków and

- the Undergraduate School of Economics and Humanities in Bielsko-Biała.

 

II. AIMS OF THE CONTEST

The aim of the Contest is to promote the knowledge of English culture, literature, geography and language, to develop students’ abilities and creative thinking, to encourage competition, to support the skills of applying possessed knowledge in practice as well as a better preparation for studies at schools of tertiary education. Moreover, the Contest Organisers aim at presentation of the wide range of courses, workshops and postgraduate studies both paid and free thanks to European Commission  Financial Support, organised by the College “The Top” and the University of Economics and Humanities and give Contest winners the chance to study at the University of Economics and Humanities.

 

III. RULES OF THE CONTEST

The following members of the Examination Board are responsible for organisation and execution of the Contest in accordance with its regulations:

IV. PARTICIPATION

1. The headmasters who submit their students to the Contest are obliged to designate a person who shall be responsible directly both for the way the Contest is carried out at their school and for the other two stages of the Contest. The Organizers reserve the right to send an observer to monitor the first stage of the Contest at the students’ schools.

2. Schools shall prepare their own lists of students who would like to take part in the Contest in the form of a computer print-out, ONLY according to the sample application form posted on web page www.olimpiada.wseh.pl

3. Each and every person who wants to take part in the Contest is required to pay PLN 12 (4 Euros for non-residents of Poland) as handling charges.

4. Schools are responsible for sending to the Organizers a list of participants for the Contest of English. Along with the lists the school should send the proof of receipt of handling charge. All these documents should be received by the Organizers no later than on  9th December 2011. Application forms which will be received later than 12th December will be excluded from the competition.

5.The lists of participants should be sent either by e-mail to olimpiada@poczta.wseh.pl or by post. They SHOULD NOT be handwritten.

 

V. THE CONTEST HAS THREE STAGES

STAGE I

1. All students in their penultimate and last grade of secondary school who are interested in expanding and testing their command of English can take part in the Contest. Persons holding the certificate of secondary education or its foreign equivalent and who would like to test their knowledge of English are also eligible to participating in the Contest.

2. Stage I participants shall take a written test of English.

3. Schools shall receive tests for each participant.

4. The English test shall take place on 12th January 2012 at 10 a.m. at the participants’ school. The test will last 75 minutes.

5. After the test the persons who were appointed by the school headmaster to supervise the Contest at their school are obliged to send the answer sheets to the address given by and within the deadline set by the Organizers.

 

STAGE II

1. Only the participants who pass Stage I of the Contest are entitled to take part in Stage II of the Contest.

2. Stage II of the Contest checks lexical and grammatical command of the given language.

3. Stage II of the Contest shall take place at the Organizers’ premises on 3rd March 2012. The English test shall take place at 2 p.m. The test will last 90 minutes.

4. The scripts from Stage II shall be kept by the Organizers for the period of three years.

 

STAGE III

1. The participants who pass Stage II test can take part in Stage III.

2. Stage III consists of an oral test.

3. The third stage of the Contest shall take place at the Organisers’ premises on 14th April 2012
at 10 a.m.

4. Each participant has the right to choose one of the following topics:

-          British/American literature

-          British/American history and culture

-          British/American geography

VI. PRIZES

1.The top three finalists of the Contest will be able to study at one of the departments of the University of Economics and Humanities. After the completion of Stage III the Examination Board has also the right to award distinctions.

2. Six finalists shall be awarded index books of the University of Economics and Humanities (three finalists of the English Contest and three finalists of the German Contest).

3. The finalists are entitled to commence their studies at the University of Economics and Humanities no later than in the school year 2015/2016.

4. Participants with the highest score will have the right to receive a three-year scholarship at the University of Economics and Humanities scholarship.

Participants who come second will receive a two-year scholarship for studies at the University of Economics and Humanities.

Participants who come third will receive a one-year scholarship for studies at the University of Economics and Humanities.

The scholarships do not include the entrance fee and other fees and charges required by the University of Economics and Humanities (e.g. the fee for re-sit exams). The finalist is required to pay the entrance fee within the deadline set by the University of Economics and Humanities. Should the finalist fail to satisfy this requirement the scholarship is then declared void.
